Vietnam’s President To Lam has commenced official visits to the European Union and Belgium, marking a significant step in enhancing bilateral relations. Arriving in Brussels on Wednesday, President Lam, accompanied by his spouse Ngo Phuong Ly and a delegation of senior officials, aims to reinforce diplomatic and economic ties between Vietnam and its European counterparts.

These visits were organized following invitations from European Council President António Costa and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever. The primary objectives include strengthening diplomatic relations, expanding economic cooperation, and advancing existing commitments. Vietnam and the EU have a long-standing relationship that began in 1990, culminating in a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in January 2026. This partnership has paved the way for collaboration in critical areas like energy, green transition, innovation, and regional security.

Vietnam’s relationship with Belgium dates back to 1973, with cooperation spanning various sectors such as trade, agriculture, education, science and technology, and development programs. Both nations also work closely on international issues through multilateral platforms, including the United Nations and the ASEAN-EU frameworks. The visits are expected to not only reinforce political ties but also transform existing agreements into practical initiatives, reflecting Vietnam’s broader strategy of expanding its engagement with European partners.

As Vietnam continues to strengthen its international relations, these visits underscore the country’s commitment to building robust partnerships with European nations. The outcomes are anticipated to benefit both Vietnam and its European allies by fostering deeper economic partnerships and enhancing diplomatic cooperation.
