Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow as Europe’s busiest airport, with passenger numbers in July reaching 8.15 million compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This shift comes as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% decline from its passenger figures in the same month last year, while Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase in traffic. Factors contributing to Heathrow’s dip include disruptions related to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The change in rankings has intensified calls for the UK government to approve Heathrow’s long-debated third runway. The airport, currently nearing full capacity with just two runways, argues that its proposed £33 billion expansion would significantly boost its annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers. Heathrow officials emphasize that additional capacity is crucial for enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism.
Opened in 2018, Istanbul Airport boasts a larger site and operates continuously around the clock, currently managing traffic with three runways and a fourth expected by the end of 2026. This continuous expansion and operational flexibility give it an edge over other European airports, allowing it to manage increasing passenger volumes efficiently.
In contrast, Heathrow’s struggle with capacity constraints highlights the pressing need for infrastructure development to maintain its competitive position within Europe. As the debate over its expansion continues, other UK airports are celebrating record numbers. London Stansted and Manchester airports reported their busiest July ever, accommodating 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers, respectively.
