Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has framed the Israeli airstrikes on Yemen not merely as a retaliation, but as a regional object lesson in Israeli power. “I think the entire region is learning Israel’s strength and determination,” he declared, positioning the raid in a broad geopolitical context.
The strikes on Sanaa, which followed a Houthi cluster bomb attack, were the “curriculum” for this lesson. The targets—a presidential compound, fuel depots, power stations—were chosen to demonstrate Israel’s ability to surgically dismantle the key assets of an adversary.
The intended “students” of this lesson are not just the Houthis. They include Hezbollah in Lebanon, Shia militias in Syria and Iraq, and, most importantly, the leadership in Iran. The message is that the consequences witnessed in Yemen could be replicated anywhere in the region.
By casting the operation in these terms, Netanyahu is engaging in a form of coercive diplomacy, using military force to teach a lesson he hopes will deter a wider range of potential aggressors.
