Brussels Airlines is set to implement a new fare structure that will eliminate the option of free overhead cabin baggage for its budget-friendly tickets on short and medium-haul journeys. The current Economy Light fare allows passengers to carry both a personal item and a standard cabin bag. However, the upcoming fare tier, named Economy Basic, will restrict travelers to one small personal item that must fit under the seat, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack.
Passengers who wish to bring a larger cabin suitcase will either need to opt for a higher fare category or incur an additional charge. This new fare scheme is slated for testing starting April 28, for flights departing on or after May 19 on select routes. Depending on its success, there are plans to expand this model across the airline’s European network.
This move aligns with a broader initiative within the Lufthansa Group, which encompasses Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Air Dolomiti. The airlines argue that the change offers more flexibility and allows those traveling light to enjoy reduced fares. However, for those who frequently carry cabin luggage, the overall cost might not differ much from current expenses once baggage fees are accounted for.
The introduction of this fare structure is anticipated to most significantly affect business travelers, frequent flyers, expatriates, and families who typically depend on cabin baggage to circumvent checked luggage fees and minimize airport waiting times. Passengers are encouraged to thoroughly examine the fare conditions before booking and to consider the total cost of travel, including potential baggage fees, rather than focusing solely on the upfront ticket price.
While the new fare could present savings for those traveling with just a personal item, for many others, the most economical ticket option might not equate to the lowest overall travel expense. As such, travelers are advised to weigh the benefits of these changes based on their specific baggage needs and travel habits.
