During a recent session of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, members of Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP delegation expressed concerns about the European Commission’s lack of response to recent legislative and political shifts in Hungary. The delegates, including MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László, highlighted that these developments could potentially weaken democratic institutions in the country.
The Hungarian lawmakers called on the European Commission to clarify its stance on several critical issues, such as constitutional amendments, limitations on political competition, modifications impacting parliamentary mandates, and questions regarding the autonomy of state institutions. These subjects have sparked debate over whether Hungary’s recent constitutional changes align with European democratic norms.
The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation pointed out that the European Commission has previously expressed rule-of-law concerns and even withheld European Union funding from Hungary as a result. They argued that the Commission’s silence on the latest developments contrasts with its earlier actions and called for consistency in applying democratic principles across all EU member countries.
Despite the pressing nature of the questions posed by the Hungarian delegates, representatives from the European Commission did not provide detailed responses during the hearing. The lack of clarity from the Commission leaves room for further debate on the EU’s role in addressing internal political shifts within its member states.
